You Are the Face of Your Business—Start Acting Like It

Kim Bode presents at the Michigan Celebrates Small Business Summit

It was standing room only. Business owners packed into a room to talk about something most of us avoid like the plague: ourselves.

Not our services.
Not our logos.
Not our team’s credentials or the client list we’re proud of.

Us.

Because here’s the truth: people don’t buy from logos—they buy from people.

And if you’re not showing up for your business, you’re holding it back.

What We Don’t Talk About Enough

We glorify entrepreneurship like it’s all sunshine and freedom, but behind the scenes it’s burnout, decision fatigue, and trying to figure out why you’ve posted on LinkedIn for three weeks and still feel invisible.

That’s the dirty little secret of small business ownership: you become invisible in your own marketing.

You’re too busy solving problems, building systems, signing checks, fixing the copier, answering client texts at 9 p.m. You don’t have time to promote yourself, so you bury your story behind a logo and call it branding.

It’s not.

This Isn’t Personal Branding for Influencers

This isn’t about becoming an “influencer.” It’s not about selfies, filters, or posting motivational quotes every Tuesday.

It’s about personal branding as a business strategy.
It’s about being visible—on purpose.

Your personal brand is how people connect to your business. It’s what builds trust, drives referrals, and turns forgettable businesses into memorable ones.

It’s also what sets you apart from your competition—especially the louder, slicker, corporate types who all sound the same.

Show Up Where It Matters

You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be strategic.

Ask yourself:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • What keeps you up at night?
  • What’s one weird or wonderfully quirky thing about you?

That’s your brand talking.

Now match that to where you show up. Boards. Events. Client meetings. LinkedIn. Your email signature. Stop hiding. If people can’t see you, they can’t choose you.

“Don’t be the best in the world at what you do. Be the only one in the world who does what you do.” —Seth Godin

Want to Grow? Be Seen.

If you want more clients, more opportunities, more meaningful connections, here’s your to-do list:

  • Finalize and share the 3 words you want to be known for
  • Rewrite your About section (ditch the corporate voice—tell the real story)
  • Talk about your why
  • Share what’s actually happening in your business (the messier, the better)

Marketing yourself isn’t optional anymore. Your business needs your story. Your people need your voice.

Your Brand Is You

Not everyone’s going to like it. Good.

That means you’re doing something worth paying attention to.

You don’t need to blend in. You need to own what makes you unforgettable.

So go ahead. Say the thing. Post the story. Raise your hand. Speak your mind.

Be the face of your business.

And if you need a reminder—or a push—the full presentation is here.

See you out there.

Absolutely loved this post—such a refreshing dose of honesty!

At YDesign, we see this struggle all the time. As a team rooted in freelance website development and digital branding, we work with passionate business owners who pour everything into their business—except themselves. We’re constantly reminding our clients that no matter how sleek your website or how sharp your logo, people buy from people.

Personal branding isn’t a vanity play—it’s strategy. It’s the heartbeat behind your digital presence. And yes, showing up isn’t always comfortable, but it’s necessary. When founders dare to be visible, real growth happens.

Thanks for saying what so many need to hear!

#You will make decisions, and then you will make those decisions “right.”

Indecision keeps you paralyzed, failure is part of the process, and you need to treat every outcome as a learning opportunity. Life and business require constant iteration, and the best you can do is keep moving forward.

No one has it all figured out, but not deciding means not growing.
Joey and I cordially invite you to get some Big Deal Energy™️ and show the world what the f*ck you’re made of. Coming to you June, September and November. Link in bio.
What’s your Big Deal Energy™️? When they told me I was “too much,” I made it my business model and the foundation of my personal brand, along with iced red wine, dog rescue, ADHD, and dismantling the patriarchy.
